Korean Jesus Art
by Woonbo Kim Ki-Chang

In 1950, during the Korean War, Kim Ki-Chang fled to take refuge from the war in
his mother-in-law's house. As he grieved over the suffering of his people, Kim Ki-Chang
thought about how the suffering of the Korean people compared to the sufferings of
Jesus Christ.
During this time, his American missionary friend, Anders Kristian Jensen, encouraged
Kim Ki-Chang to paint a series of pictures to depict the life of Christ in a traditional
Korean style.
In the artist's autobiography, Kim Ki-Chang recalled his missionary friend saying
to him, “A lot of Christian art is being produced in different cultures to promote
the universality of Jesus Christ. I hope you gain the strength to complete the Korean
Christian art.”
Starting his paintings in 1952, Kim Ki-Chang was so absorbed in the project that
he completed these 31 works of art in just a year and a half. From "The Annunciation"
to "The Ascension", Kim Ki-Chang painting the life of Christ in a style that speaks
to the heart and culture of the Korean people.
